    Upper Dolpo Trekking

    This trek is rewarding of beautiful deep valleys of Himalayan region of western Nepal, high passes and Himalayan peaks, Fresh lake Phoksundo, 800 years old Shey Monastery and rare wildlife. It is in great Himalayan trail bordering Tibet through western part. Upper Dolpo is rain shadow area also suitable to trek during monsoon season. Trekking itinerary starts from Jhuphal and end at Jhphal via several high passes and remote areas. it also have option to end trekking at Jomsom Annapurna region via Sangda La (5,515m) pass. Planning this trek with Shangda La pass is bit risk of high snow and can be block. Upper Dolpo is the restricted area need special permit for trekking. Since tea houses are not has build in entire area, all the arrangement of accommodation and foods have to carry from Dunai and it has to be camping with all equipments. Nepal highland treks leads this trek with professional guide, cooking team and other supporter team. Until 1996, area was not allowed to enter for any foreigners. Most holy place Shy Gompa is one of the most important in Upper Dolpa where pilgrimage makes special parikrama as it believed as younger brother of Mount Kailash of Tibet.

    Trekking permit

    Upper Dolpo is one of the restricted area announce by government of Nepal. Special trekking permit need to enter dolpo region for foreigners. There should be minimum 2 trekkers to obtain Upper Dolpo restricted area permit. Cost of this permit is USD 500 for ten days and USD 50 per day per person after 10 days. Another permit is shey phoksundo national park. Both the permit will handle by Nepal highland treks as per your passport details.

    Camping and foods arrangement

    Entire trekking is camping trek after your landing at Juphal airport. Our main team members like trekking leader, trekking guide and trekking cook fly together with you from Kathmandu. Trekking porters and other helpers will join you from Juphla airport. Camping gears, camping equipment and your luggage is carried by mules. There are fixed camping places, accordingly we have designed trekking itinerary. During the camping, we will provide hot drinks, freshly cooked foods (Breakfast, Lunch Dinner) from our camping tent. Drinking water during camping days provided from our kitchen. It is boiled water and fill it in your water bottled for day.   

    Best Season

    Same like much of Nepal trekking destinations, the best time to trek Upper Dolpo is in spring season (Month of April to May) and in autumn season (month of October to November). Both of these seasons, temperatures are pleasant and clear weather. It is very less chance of heavy snowfall at high altitudes. Another best season is in monsoon (month of June till August), it does not fall heavily in the high region of Upper Dolpo. Less rainfall makes this region greenery, blooming and more beautiful.

    Trip cost and its services are based on two pax a group. Trekking cost will be different if you are more than 2 pax a group. Please send us email with inquiry of this trek by mentioning total trekkers in your group. Since this trek is less choices of tourist due to long days itinerary, expensive and hard trek, there is less posibilities of offering several joining dates.   

    Useful Information

    Trekking equipment to Bring

    You should bring both light and warm clothes for this trek. During the hiking in day time, you will need t-shirt and light trousers. For the evening and morning needs light warm clothes at low altitude region. More warm clothes are requiring for upper part of Dolpo. Light hiking boot and real trekking water proof boot need in shoes. Warm shocks, light shocks, inner trouser, warm head cover cap, hat for sun and good eye glass are list of equipment you should bring. Important trekking equipment is sleeping bag. Better to bring your own sleeping bag, if not we also can provide you from Kathmandu. If you are used to with trekking sticks, that is also important things to bring. We provide sleeping mats and small pillow inside your tent. If you want to bring your own small light sleeping mat, you can. Our expert team will check your personal trekking equipment before leaving Kathmandu for this trek. If there is anything lack, you can buy or take it or hire it in Kathmandu. You can’t but any trekking equipment at starting of trekking point or in on the way of Upper Dolpo.

    Difficulties

    Upper Dolpo trekking is considered strenuous. There are steep ascents, three passes above 5000 m., nights spends up to 4,960 meters and other several nights spent above 3500 meters altitude. Every day, minimum 5 to 6 hours trekking and some long trekking days more than 6 hours. The fact that this is a camping trek adds to the physical challenge and discomfort of trekking in Upper Dolpo. This is the reason we are putting 2 rest days on the way in between. This trek is only suitable for those who are regularly doing trekking and hiking and physically fit. Not for beginner trekkers.

    Nepal visa

    Visa is on arrival for most of the foreigners. On arrival visa should be valid for a month since trekking itinerary is 27 days. A month visa cost USD 50 and can pay by cash. Procedure to take Nepal visa is to fill a form and stay in queue. You also can feel online visa form before landing Nepal and get stamp of it in your passport. No need to bring any recommendation documents from anyone.
